Center for Counselling provides counselling services on a one to one basis, for couples, and in groups. We offer traditional ‘talk therapy’ as well as expressive art therapy through methods such as movement, creative writing, visual art, and collage.
Group therapy involves bringing individuals with a common issue together for discussion and mutual support. It can be very valuable for individuals to see that they are not alone and that others share their concerns. The different perspectives group members have to offer can be helpful to others in the group who may have dealt with similar problems in their own lives. As a member of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy, Center for Counselling provides a variety of group therapy options to our clients.
LGBT Individuals and Their Families
Center for Counselling provides short-term, culturally sensitive counselling to LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) individuals and their families. Many LGBT people are under great stress in their lives due to the lack of acceptance of their LGBT identity by family, friends, or coworkers. According to recent research, LGBT people are more than twice as likely to commit suicide than other groups. Even in less extreme cases, the difficulties many LGBT people face in their every day lives make them especially vulnerable to emotional and psychological difficulties that can require counselling intervention. In spite of this, many counselors and doctors in Chennai are not educated about LGBT issues, with the result that LGBT people in Chennai may feel they have nowhere to go for help. In order to address this situation, Center for Counselling began working with the LGBT community in Chennai in 2007. We have provided counselling for many LGBT people as well as their parents and other family members. Some parents with a son or daughter who is LGBT have found the support groups we have run for parents especially helpful.
Heterosexual and Gay Couples
We offer counselling and therapy for both heterosexual and gay couples. Counselling both or couples together and for individuals who are married or in a relationship can help to resolve the conflicts and other problems that can come up in any marriage or other relationship.
Center for Counselling works with children both at our offices and by providing long term professional counsellors to schools in Chennai. In the school setting, our counsellors work with children on many issues, including children with behavior problems, those who may be disturbed by something happening at home, and by addressing issues such as bullying on both an individual and classroom level. Our counsellors also provide regular workshops for parents and teachers on parenting skills and ways to handle difficult children in class, respectively.
At our offices, we see children who are having some difficulty in their lives that may require more significant intervention and attention to resolve. In many cases the children we see are having difficulty with a recent change in their life, such as the loss of a parent, a divorce, or a move to a new city and school.
