 The Conference:

Expressive Art therapy is a relatively new form of therapeutic practice. It allows individuals to access and communicate their feelings and thoughts in more vivid and imaginative ways. This field emerged in the mid – 1970s. Expressive Arts Therapy is a holistic approach utilising various art forms such as imagery, drama, dance / movement, music, poetry, story-telling and dream-work.

Women’s Christian College

Women’s Christian College, founded in 1915 is affiliated to the University of Madras and is an autonomous college since 1982. It is a Government aided minority institution. The college has been re-accredited by NAAC with Grade A and is identified as a college with  Potential for Excellence by UGC. Further, NIRF has placed the college among the top ten colleges in India in 2017.

The Department of Psychology is student centric with unique innovative courses and has 43 years of commitment to academic excellence. The Department of Psychology at WCC and EWC have successfully collaborated in bringing Post Graduate Diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy for the 7th Consecutive year in 2017.

The Department of English, now in its 55th year, provides students with an exposure to literatures from the world over and hands – on experience in diverse skills in short -film making, theatre production, journalism and advertising. With the students also involved in community and team  work, they emerge socially and culturally sensitised, empowered young women.

East West Center for Counselling & Training (EWC) was founded by Magdalene Jeyarathnam and registered in 2007.  We are an Expressive Arts therapy Center and we depute therapists to schools, colleges and corporates. Our clientele are from ages 3 to 75, we work with individuals, couples, families and groups. We have been pioneering Expressive Arts therapy workshops and trainings since the inception of our organisation in various cities, towns – large and big in India. In collaboration with Women’s Christian College we jointly teach and award a one year long Diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy Course since 2011. This course is the first course that began in India as an Expressive Arts therapy diploma and now has completed 6 years and this year we have the 7th batch of students. Our students come from various parts of India and beyond.

Objectives of the conference

  •       To build awareness about Expressive Arts Therapy.
  •       To showcase the application of various art modalities in Expressive Arts Therapy.
  •       To introduce the  participants to the significance of  Expressive Arts to personal wellbeing and growth.
  •       To provide updates on current trends in practice of Expressive Arts Therapy.
  •       To understand the role of creative expression in enhancing personal and professional effectiveness.

Thrust Areas  

  1. Individual modalities in Expressive Art Therapy – dance / music / art / storytelling / drama / etc.
  2. The Intermodal approach in Expressive Arts Therapy.
  3. Training in Expressive Arts Therapy.

Expected Outcomes 

  1. Broadening the knowledge base, understanding behaviour practices, new techniques and professional code of ethics.
  2. Networking with experienced therapist and exchanging competencies to facilitate further collaborations.
  3. Learning new techniques from experts, building skills.

Conference Delegates:  Rs 2,500/. This covers the fees for the 13th and 14th, the Conference Proceedings Book and CD and lunch and tea on both days. The last day to register online is 10th February 2018.

Student registration:  Rs 600/.  This covers the fees for the 13th and 14th, lunch and tea on both days. Student registrations can be made through their institution as cash payment. Special discount of Rs. 5000 for group registrations of 10 or more is available.
